I'm going to try to create a short for a program I'm helping test, so I took it upon myself to redesign some characters, and then I'm going to do the whole cut-out thing. Hopefully this one works out better than ones in the past I've worked on. (Franklin Gothic - I mostly chose it because the C goes with the circle well, but I feel it goes well with the rest of the design.)

A test always turns into a trial

tone studies

So I took photographs from my reference collection and decided to finally do some tone studies. The first one was tough because it was a bad quality photograph that I was going off of, so I had to make some leaps of faith. No big deal, because i kind of like the way it turned out, even if the expression isn't as good as the one from the photograph.
That said the second one is really well done, but creeps me out because one of the eyes is slightly off. When I finally brought that picture into the program I was using I found out what the problem was: I drew the head at the wrong angle.

I think I just liked the rough so much that I went for it before double checking like I should have. At least this is a skill I know I have in me.

Doctor Doctor

So, I'm still not sure if I can put my portfolio pieces up from the job I just finished, so I decided to give you a rough idea of what I did. So my first thought was to do one of the giant machines from Mega Man.
I was thinking about the HD remakes of some games, and how they never fix a problem that a lot of SNES and Genesis games have - they have side lighting. Which is fine if you're willing to color left and right differently. I find bottom and top lighting a smart choice since it allows you to flip the drawing without any problems like that.
This is Wily's Machine from Mega Man 2. I believe this is as far as I got before I lost completely as a child. The first Mega Man game I beat without cheating was Mega Man 6. Which I also beat today. It may seem big now, but you can view it even bigger if you'd like. I didn't clean it up in a pixel based editor, but it's looking like maybe I should.

Don't Stop Me Now!

It's been too long since I posted anything. Makes sense - I was working at a wonderful freelance job. They're a real great group of people, and I was more than happy to help contribute to their project. I hope I get more work from them in the future.
